Apple Launches Unlocked iPhone 3GS for Rs. 19,990 in India

The iPhone 3GS was available quite a while back through network operators like Vodafone and Airtel. But then, these devices were not unlocked and users were tied down to those particular subscribers if they had to use their iPhones. However it looks like Apple is enticing more people to buy their smartphones by announcing the factory unlocked version at a very reasonable price of Rs. 19,990.
At an alluring price?!?

According to BGR, the iPhone 3GS will be offered by Airtel and Aircel for now, probably others will follow suit after some time. But what’s cool is that you can change operators as and when you wish and keep the handset with you. It’s quite obvious that many will crib about India being Apple’s favourite dumping ground and that we only get old products etc. But on the brighter side, there are many out there who would wish to own an iPhone but are put off by the exorbitant pricing. This initiative can possibly attract more people to Apple’s products.

Of course, you’ll be missing out on a few features like Facetime, but you can’t have everything, right? We’ll take a quick look at the iPhone 3GS’ specifications now.

3.5-inch Capacitive touchscreen with 320 x 480 pixels
3G, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS support
EDGE/GPRS
Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, headset support only
3.15 megapixel camera with autofocus
3.5 mm audio jack
256 MB RAM
8/16/32 GB Capacities
600 MHz ARM Cortex processor

So now that you have an unlocked version of the iPhone 3GS coming in at Rs. 19,990, are you willing to take the plunge?

Nokia N9 Full Specifications, Features and Price

The N9 has arrived. Functional units of Nokia's long-awaited MeeGo smartphone have finally landed into our eager hands and we've got a gallery of images to provide you with below. What we can say from our first experience is that we're in the presence of a fantastically designed device with a gorgeous AMOLED screen and some highly responsive performance. Hold tight as we're updating our fuller impressions after the break, where you'll soon be treated to our first hands-on video with the Nokia N9.

Nokia N9 Price, Nokia N9 review, Nokia N9 smartphoneUpdate: Hands-on video plus a live demonstration of the N9's ability to pair Bluetooth devices over NFC (very impressive!) can now be found after the break.

The N9 UI, as you'll have learned from the product announcement, is Nokia's Harmattan skin atop MeeGo 1.2, which is built around three core home views. The central one is your app organizer / launcher, to one side of which you have a notifications and activities section -- which will be populated by phone calls, calendar alerts, and social network updates -- and to the other you get a live app switcher. That trio is navigable in a carousel fashion, meaning that you can keep cycling through all three by flicking your finger in one direction. Double-tapping the screen wakes the phone up and then you can unlock it with a swipe in any direction. Similar swipes, starting from one edge of the screen and going to the other, allow you to exit apps into the home screen. What we can say about all these aspects of the interface is that they're done exceedingly well and make the somewhat aged OMAP3630 processor look terrific. Fluid animations are evident throughout, navigation is natural, and this marks a major advance over anything else Nokia has given us on the software front in terms of touch-based UI.

Physically, the N9 feels about as good as a device built out of plastic can do. Nokia's devoutly calling it polycarbonate in order to highlight that this isn't just any old plastic, it's a high-grade variety that inspires confidence in its durability while also having the sharp looks to keep aesthetes happy as well. The whole phone is essentially built into the external shell, which does mean the battery isn't user-replaceable and there's no microSD expandability, but at least you can hot-swap the MicroSIM (yes, Micro) card without needing to reboot the handset.

The Clear Black AMOLED display is truly a sight to behold, with stunning viewing angles, a curved Gorilla Glass front, and some pretty excellent (for AMOLED) performance out in the sunlight. We compared it side by side with a Super LCD-equipped Incredible S and the N9 more than held its own. The screen is easily one of this new phone's great strengths, though we'd argue the intuitive UI, responsiveness, and eye-catching industrial design are pretty high up on that list too. All in all, we're highly impressed by what Nokia has put together here, though the N9 does prompt us to ask why the company has opted against making MeeGo its long-term smartphone OS of choice. What we've seen today is a damn fine smartphone with some very neat ideas, one which certainly merits the title of being Nokia's flagship. Or it will do, when it launches later in the year.

Watch Out, Nook: Amazon Launches $164 Kindle 3G With Ads

Amazon Kindle, Amazon Kindle 3G, Amazon Kindle Wi-Fi, Amazon Kindle for $164

Watch out, Nook: Amazon has just launched a 3G version of its ad-supported Kindle for $164.

The new device, officially called the Kindle 3G With Special Offers, is almost identical to the $114 ad-supported Wi-Fi Kindle except for the addition of 3G functionality. The device is a 6-inch device that displays the occasional advertisement. In return, users get special offers and a $25 discount on the Kindle 3G’s $189 price tag. In a statement, Amazon Kindle director Jay Marine called it “the lowest price for any 3G ereader.”

The special deals associated with the 3G Kindle are similar to the Wi-Fi version. Some of the special offers Amazon will launch “in the coming weeks” include $10 for a $20 Amazon gift card, 20% discounts on 200 HDTVs, and $1 for select Kindle books.

The announcement of the Kindle 3G With Special Offers comes just hours after Barnes & Noble unveiled its $139 touchscreen Nook, a Wi-Fi-only ereader device that is lighter than the Kindle and boasts two months of battery life. Barnes & Noble also claims that it controls 25% of the ebook market, something that can’t be sitting well with Amazon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Coming in a Few Days With Android 3.1

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is only a “few days away” according to a tweet from Samsung’s Mobile US account.

Furthermore, as clarified in another tweet from Samsung, the new version of Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be sporting the latest version of Honeycomb AKA Android 3.1.

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is actually a replacement for another tablet in the same name, which Samsung itself thought was unworthy of competing with Apple’s iPad 2.

The device sports a dual-core, 1 GHz CPU, a 10.1 inch, 1280×800 pixel screen, a 3-megapixel back camera as well as 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats, and all of that comes in a case that weighs 1.3 pounds and is only .34” thick.

Toshiba to announce its new Android Tablet "Thrive"

Toshiba Android 3.0 Thrive, Toshiba Mobile, Thoshiba Phone, Androide GadgetsToshiba is soon going to launch an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet named "Thrive". The tablet was being advertised for pre-order at JR.com, but has suddenly and inexplicably been pulled down as of the time of filing this report. You can still viewed the Google Cache copy of the page over here. The price quoted was US$579, which is about Rs.26,200 - not bad for what is on offer.

Powered by a 1 GHz Dual core Tegra 2 processor, this 10.1-inch tablet sports a capacitive multitouch screen with 1280x800 pixels resolution. This screen features Toshiba Adaptive Display technology, which adjusts the brightness and contrast to suit the surrounding lighting conditions, practically allowing you to use this laptop even in sunny weather. Adobe Flash support with hardware acceleration is present for an enriching web browsing experience.

Along with a 5 Megapixel primary camera with Auto-focus, Digital zoom and 720p video capture at the back, there is also a 2 Megapixel HD camera at the front for video calling. HDMI output lets you hook up this tablet to your HDTV display using an HDMI cable and watch movies on the big screen in 1080p Full HD resolution. Thanks to the Toshiba Tablet's Resolution+ technology incorporated in this device, even Standard Definition (SD) video content is upscaled neatly, with no details lost.

The tablet features on-board, a GPS, an accelerometer and a digital compass, helping to pinpoint its exact location and motion. Even the battery is the user-replaceable, which is something every consumer would want, and no tablet manufacturer wants to give. This allows you to carry a second battery pack and replace the battery on-the-go when the first battery runs out of juice. Connectivity is taken care of by Wi-Fi (with hotspot capability), USB 2.0 (with one full and one mini USB port) and Bluetooth. No mention is made of GSM connectivity, so that is probably not going to be available in this version at least. An SD memory card slot is also provided to augment the 32 GB internal memory on-board the device.

Toshiba has been delaying the launch of this tablet, and may delay it to the third quarter of this calendar year. The launch date is therefore not clear. We must note here that Toshiba has already launched the Prot g 12-inch tablet in India, so this tablet may be launched soon too.

HTC Flyer: 7-inch Android tablet

The HTC Flyer 7-inch Android tablet is already available overseas, but U.S. shoppers will be able to find it at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile starting May 22. I just received a shipping unit, so here are some first impressions.

HTC Flyer 7-inch Android
First, let's get the basics out of the way. The Flyer is a Wi-Fi-only variant of HTC's tablet, and costs $500--without its distinctive accessory, an $80 stylus. The 4G version will appear on Sprint later this summer as the Sprint Evo View 4G. The Sprint tablet will have a black case and 4G connectivity, while the HTC-branded tablet is silver with white accents.

The Flyer has an attractive design and measures 7.7 inches by 4.8 inches and is half an inch thick. That's comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7-inch, which is, to date, the only other 7-inch tablet from a mobile manufacturer, and measures 7.5 by 4.7 by 0.47 inches.

Although the Flyer has approximately the same thickness and dimensions as the Galaxy Tab, I found this tablet more comfortable to hold. That's because the edges are curved and gently taper, as compared with the Galaxy Tab's dated-looking, boxy design. Also, the tablet gently curves upward at the top/bottom (or left/right if you're holding it in the landscape position); the curve gives the tablet a place for your thumbs to rest.

I was surprised that I preferred holding the Flyer considering it weighs slightly more than the Tab. The Tab weighs 0.84 pounds, while the HTC Flyer weighs 0.92 pounds, but in-hand, I didn't notice the difference.

I do like the 7-inch form. It's very friendly for one-handed operation. For that matter, I also like the T-Mobile G-Slate, which has an 8.9-inch screen. By comparison, Apple's iPad 2 (9.7-inch screen) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (with a 10.1-inch screen, natch) are too unwieldly to hold for any length of time in one hand.

HTC Flyer Android tablet with Wi-Fi

The HTC Flyer is unique for the moment:

it's the first tablet running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Samsung recently announced plans to migrate the Galaxy Tab to 2.3.3 as well, but that roll-out started mid-month in the United Kingdom before beginning moving to other European markets and hasn't yet come across the Atlantic.

I was disappointed that HTC decided to ship the Flyer running Google's phone OS, and not Android 3.x. The layout and organization of Android 3.x is far better suited to tablets, and, more critically, the Web experience is far better in Honeycomb than on either 2.2 or 2.3.3. On the Flyer, just as on the Tab, most Web pages present detect the browser as a mobile browser. But I really want the full Web page experience on the tablet, even if I have to enlarge areas to read them fully.

Along with the inclusion of the pen, HTC brings something extra with its HTC Sense overlay. This version of Sense has clearly been optimized for the larger screen of the tablet, and brings a pleasing visual interactivity that Android 2.3.3 lacks otherwise. Unfortunately, as much as I liked Sense on the Flyer, I found myself more looking forward to what HTC will do with its Sense interface on Honeycomb than I did appreciating what it added in the here and now.

The good news is that HTC says the Flyer is upgradable to Honeycomb, and that a Honeycomb update will come. The bad news is the company wouldn't say when. At least HTC has a relatively solid reputation of issuing updates for its phones, so hopefully that efficiency will translate to its tablet, too.

Stay tuned for more hands-on with the HTC Flyer.

Android Malware Up by an Alarming 400 Percent

ANDROID, ANDROID Gadgets, ANDROID NewsA recent report on mobile malware released by Juniper networks revealed some startling figures. The report suggested a 400 percent rise in malware on the popular Android platform. Google’s Android platform has earned itself quite a reputation since its inception and this is no news. What began as an app store with roughly about 50,000 apps now houses a good 200,000 apps. However, the platform is now being deemed as the biggest distribution point for malware across the mobile platform.

Over the past few months, Android users have been victims of threats ranging from various levels of intensity. What began first as a threat tool for desktop users has now furthered onto the mobile users. Keeping this view in mind, a host of anti-virus applications have been released in a last ditch, but less than satisfactory effort to stabilize the situation. One instance would be the attacks that a malicious app called DroidDream began doing rounds. Google did intervene but most of the damage had been done already.

However, it now remains to be seen how well Google empowers its popular Android.

Sony Ericsson Xperia acro announced

Sony Ericsson Xperia acro

Sony Ericsson has recently lifted the curtain for the Xperia acro, making it the latest addition to the Xperia range as it was specially designed for users who live in the Land of the Rising Sun. Sounds familiar? Some of our dear readers might just be confused with it being the Xperia Arc, but that is another story for a different day. The Xperia acro will continue to carry the success (hopefully) of the Xperia line, spearheading the challenge with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

It will not come up short where the operating system is concerned, as it runs on the latest version of Android (2.3 Gingerbread if you do not know). With mobile TV functionality being touted, you can expect best-in-class imaging and display technology features from Sony, after all, who else better to do so than they?

Sony Ericsson Xperia acroThe Sony Ericsson Xperia acro will be a flagship model in Japan, and it will be interesting to see how the handset holds up to the others in such a highly competitive market. After all, the Japanese tend to have really different phones from the rest of the world (same with the Koreans), and for something more “mainstream” like the Xperia acro to make a debut spices up things.

As mentioned earlier, the Xperia acro will tout mobile TV functionality, and with its Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, you will find your eyes more than welcoming the 4.2” display. Not only that, you can capture stunning 8.1-megapixel shots with its camera that boasts the Exmor R engine for mobile handsets, allowing one to shoot low-noise, high quality images and even record HD video (720p) under low light conditions.

There is no word on pricing as at press time, but we do know that the Sony Ericsson Xperia acro will hit Japan later this summer in just two colors – black and white. Surely you can’t go wrong there, right?

Samsung Announces the W200 Pocket Camcorder

If you’re still in shock and grief for the Flip Cam’s passing away, here’s something to make you feel a lot better. Samsung has announced a pocket camcorder for outdoor full high definition filming, called the W200.

Samsung Announces the W200 Pocket Camcorder for Outdoor Enthusiasts

The camera is said to be shock, water and dust-proof, thanks to the rugged body that it boasts of. It’s specially devised for taking videos and pictures underwater, which means that the W200 is also capable of submerging underwater to a maximum level of three meters.

The W200 has a built-in USB arm that can help transfer movies and videos to and from a PC or a laptop. The pocket camcorder is integrated with a 5 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and an F2.2 Bright Lens. It has a special Aqua mode setting which automatically realizes the environment for underwater videos. The camcorder has an anti-water coating which is meant to keep the 2.3-inch LCD screen away from condensation. The W200’s embedded lens is also said to have an anti-fog coating which is supposed to help in getting blur-free pictures.

The pocket camcorder also has a Record Pause feature that lets the user pause the recording and then resume it later from that particular point. It has some extra features like Smart Filter and Fish-Eye Settings meant to add some more options while taking pictures or videos.

The W200 will be no sale from next month and is said to be priced at $159 (approx Rs. 7,100). We definitely hope to see this pocket camcorder hit Indian shores soon, especially because it might survive after hitting the shore as well!

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Packs Android 2.1 Eclair, 3-inch display, 600 MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Sony Ericsson has announced its first ever Walkman brand smartphone running Google Android 2.1 Eclair update in Indonesia. Sporting 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, the new Sony Ericsson W8 walkman smartphone looks very similar to Xperia X8. There's no word on the pricing and this phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malayasia, Phillipines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam from Q2 2011 in Azure Blue, Metallic Red and Iconic Orange.

New Sony Ericsson W8 has a 3-inch capacitive HVGA (320x480) display and houses 600Mhz processor under the hood. With 128MB memory on board, this handset comes with Android 2.1 Eclair running on it and I doubt if it will get Froyo richness. Kindly forget about the phone getting Gingerbread. Sony Ericsson has layered the Timescape UI on the top of Android.

Branded as a Walkman series smartphone, the W8 will have Walkman Music Player ported to Android, TrackID music recognition, and PlayNow technologies. At the back lies a 3.2 megapixel camera that would give you mediocre quality photos along with Geo-tagging capability.

Being 3G Network compatible, the new W8 Android phone offers 23 hours and 40 minutes worth of music listening time. The phone is connectible wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apart from that, the W8 offers Twitter and Facebook integration in the Timescape UI.

Sounds like a good contender for sub Rs. 10,000 Android based smartphone, the Sony Ericsson W8 does look a bit tacky in Iconic Orange, may be its just me.

World's Smallest 64Gb NAND Flash Memory

World's Smallest 64Gb NAND Flash MemoryWorld's Smallest 64Gb NAND Flash Memory
SanDisk and Tsohiba announced the world's smallest and the most advanced memory process technology node in the world. It is 64-gigabit (Gb), 2-bits-per-cell (X2) based monolithic chip made on 19-nanometer (nm) NAND flash memory chip.

Sampling world's smallest NAND flash memory device begin this quarter and high-volume production will begin in the second half of 2011 by Toshiba. With increase in production, SanDisk is planing to add 3-bits-per-cell (X3) products fabricated with the 19nm process technology.

Yoram Cedar, executive vice president and chief technology officer of SanDisk said that "We are excited to introduce the world's smallest and lowest-cost NAND flash chips based on industry-leading 19nm process technology in our ongoing collaboration with our manufacturing partner Toshiba" . Further adding he said "Products based on this technology are designed to enable new applications, form factors and consumer experience that will continue to drive the flash industry to new heights."

The companies said the smaller process would help device makers to get more storage in less space. There's no mention of the chip's actual dimensions besides citing the prospect of stacking a batch of 16 to deliver 128GB modules for use in mobile phones, tablet computers and other devices. The 19nm NAND chips are equipped with Toggle DDR2.0 to enhance data transfer speed, and use an All-Bit-Line architecture with proprietary programming algorithms and multi-level data storage management that will allegedly uphold performance and reliability.

Latest Gadgets at the Gadget Show Live 2011‎

Latest Gadgets made its yearly pilgrimage to the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham to play with the latest and greatest tech that manufacturers had to offer. Fighting our way through the bear pit that is the coffee table in the press room, we emerged refreshed and ran around attempting to see as much as possible before the caffeine wore off.

apple iPad stands

iPad stands were ubiquitous, but the only one that actually caught our eye was Cygnett’s that had copied Apple’s Smart Cover technology (well the wake from sleep functionality) and added a stand that works vertically and horizontally – all in a big (and admittedly slightly bulky) leather case. They were stood next to Henge Docks – a great laptop dock that enabled you to use your MacBook with a Widescreen monitor and pretend you have a full desktop. We also had a quick look at the PopBox – a self-styled “Apple TV” killer, that streams your HD content via DLNA and its own app store. And we also played with some wireless Jaybird headphones, the Qbdesktop USB speakers and FlipVideo who surprisingly said nothing about their impending demise.

Of course this is a tiny fraction of what we had a play with so expect to see a few more in-depth articles over the coming week.

Bamboo stylus for the iPad

Wacom had just that day released a Bamboo stylus for the iPad. I’m keen doodler and had a quick play. It feels great to hold – and is very close to holding a real pen. It’s also 25 percent slimmer tip than main competitors as the reps insisted on telling me. The prototype app to accompany it (you can of course use the stylus with all drawing apps) looks pretty fun as well but wasn’t yet ready for final assessment. The stylus should be out in mid-May for about £25.

We waved at the people from 3M who were showing off their MPro 180 wireless pico projector rigged up to a PS3 and an iPad. We had a more in-depth look at it here. The most stylish area was the shiny white Golla zone where lots of beautiful people looked over enthusiastic about a range of pretty looking laptop bags and camera cases. We took a look at some here.

batman-car
Our first stop was Brasso (covered here) who had a little stall set up to clean all our gadgets. As an owner of a filthy iPhone, iPad and pair of glasses it was nice to have someone give them a quick wipedown. Plus there was cake. Orbitsound had their T3 mobile stereo speaker on display – a little iPod classic shaped unit that provides stereo sound on the go – and that can be worn around the neck to create a sound aura. Amazing. Also a potential nightmare if young kids on London buses get hold of it.
