Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Packs Android 2.1 Eclair, 3-inch display, 600 MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Sony Ericsson has announced its first ever Walkman brand smartphone running Google Android 2.1 Eclair update in Indonesia. Sporting 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, the new Sony Ericsson W8 walkman smartphone looks very similar to Xperia X8. There's no word on the pricing and this phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malayasia, Phillipines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam from Q2 2011 in Azure Blue, Metallic Red and Iconic Orange.

New Sony Ericsson W8 has a 3-inch capacitive HVGA (320x480) display and houses 600Mhz processor under the hood. With 128MB memory on board, this handset comes with Android 2.1 Eclair running on it and I doubt if it will get Froyo richness. Kindly forget about the phone getting Gingerbread. Sony Ericsson has layered the Timescape UI on the top of Android.

Sony Ericsson W8: Packs Android 2.1 Eclair, 3-inch display, 600 MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera

Branded as a Walkman series smartphone, the W8 will have Walkman Music Player ported to Android, TrackID music recognition, and PlayNow technologies. At the back lies a 3.2 megapixel camera that would give you mediocre quality photos along with Geo-tagging capability.

Being 3G Network compatible, the new W8 Android phone offers 23 hours and 40 minutes worth of music listening time. The phone is connectible wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apart from that, the W8 offers Twitter and Facebook integration in the Timescape UI.

Sounds like a good contender for sub Rs. 10,000 Android based smartphone, the Sony Ericsson W8 does look a bit tacky in Iconic Orange, may be its just me.

Latest Gadgets at the Gadget Show Live 2011‎

Latest Gadgets made its yearly pilgrimage to the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham to play with the latest and greatest tech that manufacturers had to offer. Fighting our way through the bear pit that is the coffee table in the press room, we emerged refreshed and ran around attempting to see as much as possible before the caffeine wore off.

apple iPad stands

iPad stands were ubiquitous, but the only one that actually caught our eye was Cygnett’s that had copied Apple’s Smart Cover technology (well the wake from sleep functionality) and added a stand that works vertically and horizontally – all in a big (and admittedly slightly bulky) leather case. They were stood next to Henge Docks – a great laptop dock that enabled you to use your MacBook with a Widescreen monitor and pretend you have a full desktop. We also had a quick look at the PopBox – a self-styled “Apple TV” killer, that streams your HD content via DLNA and its own app store. And we also played with some wireless Jaybird headphones, the Qbdesktop USB speakers and FlipVideo who surprisingly said nothing about their impending demise.

Of course this is a tiny fraction of what we had a play with so expect to see a few more in-depth articles over the coming week.

Bamboo stylus for the iPad

Wacom had just that day released a Bamboo stylus for the iPad. I’m keen doodler and had a quick play. It feels great to hold – and is very close to holding a real pen. It’s also 25 percent slimmer tip than main competitors as the reps insisted on telling me. The prototype app to accompany it (you can of course use the stylus with all drawing apps) looks pretty fun as well but wasn’t yet ready for final assessment. The stylus should be out in mid-May for about £25.

We waved at the people from 3M who were showing off their MPro 180 wireless pico projector rigged up to a PS3 and an iPad. We had a more in-depth look at it here. The most stylish area was the shiny white Golla zone where lots of beautiful people looked over enthusiastic about a range of pretty looking laptop bags and camera cases. We took a look at some here.

batman-car
Our first stop was Brasso (covered here) who had a little stall set up to clean all our gadgets. As an owner of a filthy iPhone, iPad and pair of glasses it was nice to have someone give them a quick wipedown. Plus there was cake. Orbitsound had their T3 mobile stereo speaker on display – a little iPod classic shaped unit that provides stereo sound on the go – and that can be worn around the neck to create a sound aura. Amazing. Also a potential nightmare if young kids on London buses get hold of it.

HTC Sensation Expected To Be Launched In India Around Monsoons

HTC Sensation Expected To Be Launched In India Around Monsoons

HTC’s latest smartphone, HTC Sensation, unveiled last week in London, will hit the Indian shore in the second quarter of 2011.

HTC Sensation incorporates a 4.3-inch S-LCD (gorilla glass encased) capacitive touchscreen with a 960 x 540 pixel resolution. It has 768MB of RAM and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor with an Adreno 220 GPU making it the most powerful HTC smartphone till date.

It works on the v.2.3 Android Gingerbread OS and has the latest HTC Sense 3.0 user interface. The internal memory is 1GB which can be extended up to 32GB and the dimensions of the device are 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3 mm and it weighs at 148 grams.

HTC Sensation has an 8.1 mega pixels camera with dual LED flash and touch focus; it can record 1080p HD videos at 30 fps and has a front facing VGA camera for video calling. HTC has introduced a new feature in this device called instant capture. What instant capture does is capture a photo the moment you click the button, unlike older devices where there was a time gap of a few seconds between clicking the camera button and the picture being taken. So you will never miss that priceless moment again.

Another handy tool is the video trimmer which helps you reduce the size of the video so it is easier to share on social networking sites.

The Taiwan based HTC has also introduced Watch – an application and service that puts an entire library of the latest, premium movies and TV shows right at your fingertips, letting people discover the latest video content in an easy and visually engaging way. HTC Watch uses progressive download technology that makes it possible to watch videos without waiting for a huge file to finish downloading. HTC Watch offers the choice of renting or buying videos, and if purchased, lets you watch them on up to five different HTC devices.

Another cool feature in HTC Sensation is its lock screen; you can get info about the weather, stocks updates and social updates directly without unlocking the mobile screen. It also gives you an option of placing widgets like camera, phonebook and messages etc on the lock screen which can then be accessed directly from there.

The major difference between HTC Sensation and its predecessors like HTC Desire, Desire Z, Desire HD and HTC HD 7 is in its processor (it’s stronger in HTC Sensation) and the fact that the HTC sense 3.0 UI will not work on older versions of HTC Mobile phones.

HTC Sensation is definitely the superhero of HTC smartphones.

Microsoft Announces Office 365 Public Beta, Marketplace

Microsoft Announces Office 365 Public Beta, MarketplaceLast October, Microsoft launched a private beta of Office 365, an evolution of its Web-based version of key business products like Office, SharePoint, and Lync Server. The offering is designed to take on competitors like Google Docs, Salesforce, and Zoho.

While the beta badge is still scheduled to come off the service sometime in 2011, Microsoft has now expanded the Office 365 beta to the public, added 38 countries and 17 languages, and introduced a new Marketplace for third parties to offer more apps and services to Office 365 customers.

The Office 365 public beta has two tiers. The first, Plan 1 (P1), includes hosted versions of Office Web Apps, SharePoint Server, and Lync Server, which provide messaging, e-mail, and calendaring for businesses that need no more than 25 seats. For a price of $6 per user per month, P1 provides access to these apps and Microsoft's community support site, but not desktop Office clients or live support.

The second option, Plan E3, is designed for enterprise customers. It still has a 25-seat limit during the beta, but in addition to the P1 features and a price of $24 per seat, it includes subscription versions of Office 2010 for Windows (Microsoft is considering offering Office 2011 for Mac as well), Active Directory Sync, and 24/7 phone support.

Along with opening the doors on this public beta, Microsoft also announced the Office 365 Marketplace. It's a way for Office 365 customers to add other apps and services to their accounts from trusted Microsoft partners. For the launch, Microsoft has over 100 apps and 400 professional services available like migration assistance, domain name management, SharePoint-based CRM solutions, and more.

Microsoft has yet to set a firm deadline for releasing Office 365 other than "2011." When Office 365 goes official, pricing tiers will expand to accommodate a wider range of users, including a monthly $2 plan for those who just need business e-mail.

Samsung unleashes the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1

Samsung unleashes the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1Step aside Apple; we have a new tablet that's caught our attention! Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1. The company hasn't announced a release date for the 8.9 version of the tablet but you can see the 10.1-inch Wi-Fi only on store shelves on June 8, 2011 in the US. Samsung also plans to launch the device in India very soon after its global launch. It could launch in India as soon as 30 days after its global launch.

The 16GB version of the 10.1-inch device is priced at $499 (Rs. 22,379) and the 32GB at $599 (Rs. 26,864). The 8.9-inch due out in later this year will cost you $469 (Rs. 21,064) for the 16GB version and $569 (Rs. 25,519) for the 32GB one. The prices for the 3G versions of both the devices are still to be revealed. The prices are an approximate conversion of US prices and not the final prices at which the tablets will be launches in India.

In terms of specifications however, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems to be a threat for the iPad 2. The device has an 8.9-inch WXGA TFT LCD display with a resolution of 1200 x 800. The device is just 8.6mm thin. That's 0.036mm thinner than the iPad 2, which to the naked eye really makes no difference. None-the-less it crowns the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 as the thinnest tablet in the market. TheGalaxy Tab 8.9 is also lighter than the iPad 2 by 131gms. (This is beginning to sound like a models anorexia war than tech but any way...). The 8.9-inch beauty boasts of a 1GHz dual core processor running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, has Samsung's TouchWiz 4.0 layer and Flash 10.2 support.

The device will come with 16GB and 32GB storage variants at launch but you can expect a 64GB variant in the future. The device also comes with stereo speakers, full HD video playback, a 2MP Front facing camera; 3MP rear camera with flash and can record video at 720p HD. The device also claims to have a battery life of 10 hours from its 6800-mAh battery.

The 10.1-inch big brother possesses the same specification and is a bit heavier at 595gms. The screen resolution too remains the same at 1200 x 800.

We were there at the Samsung event at the Taj Palace, New Delhi. Stay tuned for the first pictures from there soon.

Cisco's Flip Camcorders Bite the Dust

Cisco's Flip Camcorders Bite the Dust
Cisco announced that it will shut down the Flip video camera line as part of a restructuring of its consumer business. In addition to killing the Flip, Cisco will focus its umi video conferencing products on the enterprise, but will continue to sell home Internet routers in retail stores. For current FlipShare users, Cisco says it's working on a transition plan.

In 2009, Cisco bought Pure Digital, creator of the Flip, for $590 million in stock. The acquisition was part of Cisco's plan to capture what it thought was a growing field of video communication among consumers.

While Flip cameras have improved steadily over the last two years -- the latest Flip MinoHD and UltraHD added 60 frames per second video capture-- Cisco rarely experimented with the Flip's familiar candy bar shape. The one recent exception was the Flip SlideHD, a camera with a nice touchscreen butfrustrating controls. The latest Flip cameras don't even include optical zoom, which is standard among digital cameras with video recording.

Cisco also swung and missed on FlipShare TV, a set-top box designed to let people watch their videos, along with videos from other Flip camera users, on a big screen through a dedicated online channel. It seemed a bit redundant in the age of YouTube and Facebook.

All the while, the threat of smartphones and iPods loomed. When Apple chief executive Steve Jobs introduced the fifth-generation iPod Nano with a video camera in 2009, he called out the Flip for offering just a single function at the same price as Apple's media player. The same is true for smartphones, and although Flip cameras offer better video quality, they don't match the storage capacity, location features and Internet connectivity of modern handsets.

Cisco foreshadowed the Flip's demise in February, when Jonathan Kaplan, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco Consumer Products, resigned. Kaplan was chairman and chief executive of Pure Digital when Cisco acquired the company. Announcing Kaplan's resignation, Cisco said it was taking its consumer business "to the next level."

Apparently that means laying off 550 employees and discontinuing a once-proud line of digital video cameras.

Google Brags About Android Market Stats

Google Brags About Android Market Stats
Google said during the company's earnings call on Thursday that more than 3 billion apps have been installed from the Android Market so far, and around 350,000 smartphones are activated every day. The new figures highlight the exceptional growth of Android, but when it comes to app stores, Apple's is still king.
It didn't take Google long to reach the 3 billion downloaded apps milestone for the Android Market. It took 20 months to reach 1 billion apps installed; the second billion took another five months; and then it took only two months for Google to reach 3 billion -- a 50 percent increase from the previous quarter.

However, it's unclear how Google counted the app installs, if it included third-party stores (like Amazon's), or just the Android Market.Electronista's hunch is that all stores were included in Google's count. The balance between paid and free apps is also unspecified.
Impressive Android Market stats aside, Apple's App Store is still at the top. Apple announced earlier this year that its marketplace reached 10 billion downloads, more than three times more than Android's performance. When it comes to the number of apps, Apple rules too: the App Store has more than 350,000 apps, while the Android Market clocks in at an estimated half of that number.

Gmail gets Background Customization Feature

Google has added yet another eye-candy feature to its web-based email service - Gmail. Over two years ago, Google had added themes in Gmail which certainly impressed several users, geeks and Gmail loyalists. Today onwards, Google will let you customize your Gmail with any image or your own custom image for the background. Yes, you can customize your Gmail with Kelly Clarkson's wallpaper, Dark Knight Rises Poster, or even a photo of your own. Wonder why took Gmail so long to introduce this feature.

Do note that adding a huge image to your Gmail background might make your web browser a wee bit slower. To customize background image on Gmail, go to Themes Tabs in Settings or just click here to go there directly in Gmail.

In the Themes tab, the last option is "Create your own theme" where you must click and a pop-up window will show up. Over there, you'll get a wireframe like snapshot of your Gmail, where you can customize the different areas with the colors of your choice. Click on the small box on top left corner of that window to give you a drop-down menu about colors and an option to upload image.

Check out the image below to find the upload image option where in you can pull image from Picasa or upload directly from your computer.

Skype for Android Suffers from Security Issues

Almost six months ago, popular Voice over Internet Protocol company Skype unveiled the Skype for Android App. Recently, Android enthusiast blog Android Police discovered a security issue with Skype for Android App that may lead to an open invite for hackers to access user data on the device. According to Android Police, the latest version of Skype for Android stores chats logs and other information on the microSD card un-encrypted.

Until the Android 2.2 Froyo update, all smartphone users had to install their apps on the internal on-board memory of their smartphones. Once the Froyo update was rolled out, users could install and store the apps on the MicroSD card. However, there lies a limitation as developers still get to choose whether the app should be allowed to be installed on the microSD card or not. In case the developer allows the app to be installed and store data on the microSD card, that data is supposed to be strongly encrypted. Else, it's like storing all your passwords and data in a text file on your desktop. It's plain stupidity and an open invite for anyone to steal data from there.

The latest version of Skype for Android lets users install stuff from microSD card and stores all user data such as chat logs and profile information on the card itself. However, the Skype for Android app doesn't apply encryption on that whatever additional information is saved on the external storage. That leaves the personal information of the user exposed to potential hackers.

Skype has confirmed about the issue and is said to be investigating it.

Take a look at the video by Android Police that shows the issue:

Android Handsets Specification Comparison

The Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 price range has suddenly become very exciting because of all the new Android phones that are pouring in thick and fast. For a prospective buyer, this is both good news as well as bad news. Good news because he now has a choice; bad news because there are too many options to choose from.

Each of these phones differs from one another by one or two features. It becomes difficult to keep track of these things and even if you use a compare engine the task becomes tedious because of the sheer number. So we decided to club all of these high-end smartphones into a table and list out all the important specifications, so that it is easy to compare. Some of these handsets are currently on sale in India, whereas others are yet to launch but worth keeping an eye out for.

Since these are just the specifications, we would advise not to make your buying decision solely based on them, but also have a hands-on with the phone or read/watch online reviews before committing to any of them.

This table is only for high-end phones but we may even come up with a similar one for mid-range and low-end Android phones too. Do let us know what you think about this chart, if it requires any additions or if you spot any errors.

Click on the image to view it in full size. If you are unable to view the image above, click here.

Please note that we are constantly updating the image above to correct any errors or add extra parameters as we come across them. Hence, we would advise not to save the image on your computer.

New Opera 11.10 released; Improves Opera Turbo & the Speed Dial

New Opera 11.10 released; Improves Opera Turbo & the Speed Dial
The latest release of Opera is out, and it brings some great improvements to two of the browsers beloved features, Opera Turbo, and the Speed Dial.

The updated Opera Turbo now promises of offer greater compression than ever while simultaneously improving on quality. Opera Turbo now uses Google's new open WebP image format rather than JPEG making such improvements possible.

Of course since Opera is using WebP in turbo, they have also added support for the format in the browser. While the format is far from popular - in fact it is currently not supported in any major image editor or viewer - supporting this new open format means that there is hope that the format will take off with time. You can check out a gallery of WebP images here.

The other big change is in how Opera's Speed Dial works. In recent versions Opera added support for more speed dial layouts. This feature has not received the ultimate upgrade. It now supports unlimited entries, and the layout fluidly accommodates any new entries you add rather than displaying an inflexible grid with some missing entries. Additionally, you can zoom into or out of the Speed Dial and the entries will fluidly take the optimum layout.

Another update to Speed Dial is the thumbnails displayed. While thumbnails are useful, most sites when displayed in their entirety in a small thumbnail window become indiscernible. Opera now lets website authors specify what should be shown in this thumbnail. This thumbnail need not be static either, it can provide dynamic content, even animated content that can pull information from your account, making it more personal.

Opera 11.10 also comes with improved support for web standards, with CSS3 multi-column layouts, WOFF fonts support, CSS3 gradients and more.Plug-in detection and installation has now also been automated, so if you visit a website that requires the Flash Player and you don't have it installed, Opera will download and install it automatically.

What lies ahead is Opera 11.50, preview builds of which are already available. This version is expected to finally bring hardware acceleration to the Opera browser, andwill feature an HTML5 parser, which is one of the most important parts of the new web standard.

HTC Incredible 2 - Android smartphone

HTC Incredible 2 - Android smartphone

This time last year, HTC had two Android smartphones for the mainstream: the 3.7-inch Desire, outfitted with the latest and greatest, and the 3.2-inch Legend, which was humbler in specs but offered the novelty of an aluminum unibody construction. After seeing that strategy pay off handsomely, the company's come back in 2011 with a similar proposition. The 4-inch Incredible S is now the higher-end device, while the 3.7-inch Desire S is the smaller, aluminum-shelled handset. What's curious this time, however, is that the Desire S has exactly the same 1GHz Snapdragon inside it, the same graphics, same WVGA resolution, and the same 768MB of RAM as the Incredible S. Throw in the fact it comes with Gingerbread preloaded and a few new tweaks to the Sense UI and you've got to wonder if this might not be the more, um, desirable of HTC's new Android duo. Only one way to find out, right? Full review after the break.
