Nokia N9 Full Specifications, Features and Price

The N9 has arrived. Functional units of Nokia's long-awaited MeeGo smartphone have finally landed into our eager hands and we've got a gallery of images to provide you with below. What we can say from our first experience is that we're in the presence of a fantastically designed device with a gorgeous AMOLED screen and some highly responsive performance. Hold tight as we're updating our fuller impressions after the break, where you'll soon be treated to our first hands-on video with the Nokia N9.

The N9 UI, as you'll have learned from the product announcement, is Nokia's Harmattan skin atop MeeGo 1.2, which is built around three core home views. The central one is your app organizer / launcher, to one side of which you have a notifications and activities section -- which will be populated by phone calls, calendar alerts, and social network updates -- and to the other you get a live app switcher. That trio is navigable in a carousel fashion, meaning that you can keep cycling through all three by flicking your finger in one direction. Double-tapping the screen wakes the phone up and then you can unlock it with a swipe in any direction. Similar swipes, starting from one edge of the screen and going to the other, allow you to exit apps into the home screen. What we can say about all these aspects of the interface is that they're done exceedingly well and make the somewhat aged OMAP3630 processor look terrific. Fluid animations are evident throughout, navigation is natural, and this marks a major advance over anything else Nokia has given us on the software front in terms of touch-based UI.

Physically, the N9 feels about as good as a device built out of plastic can do. Nokia's devoutly calling it polycarbonate in order to highlight that this isn't just any old plastic, it's a high-grade variety that inspires confidence in its durability while also having the sharp looks to keep aesthetes happy as well. The whole phone is essentially built into the external shell, which does mean the battery isn't user-replaceable and there's no microSD expandability, but at least you can hot-swap the MicroSIM (yes, Micro) card without needing to reboot the handset.

The Clear Black AMOLED display is truly a sight to behold, with stunning viewing angles, a curved Gorilla Glass front, and some pretty excellent (for AMOLED) performance out in the sunlight. We compared it side by side with a Super LCD-equipped Incredible S and the N9 more than held its own. The screen is easily one of this new phone's great strengths, though we'd argue the intuitive UI, responsiveness, and eye-catching industrial design are pretty high up on that list too. All in all, we're highly impressed by what Nokia has put together here, though the N9 does prompt us to ask why the company has opted against making MeeGo its long-term smartphone OS of choice. What we've seen today is a damn fine smartphone with some very neat ideas, one which certainly merits the title of being Nokia's flagship. Or it will do, when it launches later in the year.

Sony Ericsson Xperia acro announced

Sony Ericsson has recently lifted the curtain for the Xperia acro, making it the latest addition to the Xperia range as it was specially designed for users who live in the Land of the Rising Sun. Sounds familiar? Some of our dear readers might just be confused with it being the Xperia Arc, but that is another story for a different day. The Xperia acro will continue to carry the success (hopefully) of the Xperia line, spearheading the challenge with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

It will not come up short where the operating system is concerned, as it runs on the latest version of Android (2.3 Gingerbread if you do not know). With mobile TV functionality being touted, you can expect best-in-class imaging and display technology features from Sony, after all, who else better to do so than they?

The Sony Ericsson Xperia acro will be a flagship model in Japan, and it will be interesting to see how the handset holds up to the others in such a highly competitive market. After all, the Japanese tend to have really different phones from the rest of the world (same with the Koreans), and for something more “mainstream” like the Xperia acro to make a debut spices up things.

As mentioned earlier, the Xperia acro will tout mobile TV functionality, and with its Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, you will find your eyes more than welcoming the 4.2” display. Not only that, you can capture stunning 8.1-megapixel shots with its camera that boasts the Exmor R engine for mobile handsets, allowing one to shoot low-noise, high quality images and even record HD video (720p) under low light conditions.

There is no word on pricing as at press time, but we do know that the Sony Ericsson Xperia acro will hit Japan later this summer in just two colors – black and white. Surely you can’t go wrong there, right?

iPad 2 Coming to 12 More Countries This Week

Apple’s iPad 2 arrived in Japan Thursday, and the company has announced that the tablet will be in 11 more countries by Friday.

iPad 2 will be available at Apple retail stores and select Apple authorized resellers at 9 a.m. local time, as well as the Apple online store starting at 1 a.m. Apple’s suggested price for the Wi-Fi only iPad 2 is $499 for the 16 GB model, $599 for the 32 GB model and $699 for the 64 GB model. The recommended price for the 3G plus Wi-Fi version is $629 for the 16 GB model, $729 for the 32 GB model and $829 for the 64 GB model.

The countries receiving the device on Friday are: Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and the U.A.E.

Furthermore, the iPad 2 with Wi-Fi will be available in China starting Friday, May 6, and Apple will announce further international availability at a later date. Two weeks after the March 11 U.S. release of the iPad 2, Apple released the device in 25 additional countries.

Samsung Announces the W200 Pocket Camcorder

If you’re still in shock and grief for the Flip Cam’s passing away, here’s something to make you feel a lot better. Samsung has announced a pocket camcorder for outdoor full high definition filming, called the W200.

The camera is said to be shock, water and dust-proof, thanks to the rugged body that it boasts of. It’s specially devised for taking videos and pictures underwater, which means that the W200 is also capable of submerging underwater to a maximum level of three meters.

The W200 has a built-in USB arm that can help transfer movies and videos to and from a PC or a laptop. The pocket camcorder is integrated with a 5 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and an F2.2 Bright Lens. It has a special Aqua mode setting which automatically realizes the environment for underwater videos. The camcorder has an anti-water coating which is meant to keep the 2.3-inch LCD screen away from condensation. The W200’s embedded lens is also said to have an anti-fog coating which is supposed to help in getting blur-free pictures.

The pocket camcorder also has a Record Pause feature that lets the user pause the recording and then resume it later from that particular point. It has some extra features like Smart Filter and Fish-Eye Settings meant to add some more options while taking pictures or videos.

The W200 will be no sale from next month and is said to be priced at $159 (approx Rs. 7,100). We definitely hope to see this pocket camcorder hit Indian shores soon, especially because it might survive after hitting the shore as well!

Sony Ericsson W8: First Walkman Android Phone

Packs Android 2.1 Eclair, 3-inch display, 600 MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera

Sony Ericsson has announced its first ever Walkman brand smartphone running Google Android 2.1 Eclair update in Indonesia. Sporting 3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, the new Sony Ericsson W8 walkman smartphone looks very similar to Xperia X8. There's no word on the pricing and this phone will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malayasia, Phillipines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam from Q2 2011 in Azure Blue, Metallic Red and Iconic Orange.

New Sony Ericsson W8 has a 3-inch capacitive HVGA (320x480) display and houses 600Mhz processor under the hood. With 128MB memory on board, this handset comes with Android 2.1 Eclair running on it and I doubt if it will get Froyo richness. Kindly forget about the phone getting Gingerbread. Sony Ericsson has layered the Timescape UI on the top of Android.

Branded as a Walkman series smartphone, the W8 will have Walkman Music Player ported to Android, TrackID music recognition, and PlayNow technologies. At the back lies a 3.2 megapixel camera that would give you mediocre quality photos along with Geo-tagging capability.

Being 3G Network compatible, the new W8 Android phone offers 23 hours and 40 minutes worth of music listening time. The phone is connectible wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apart from that, the W8 offers Twitter and Facebook integration in the Timescape UI.

Sounds like a good contender for sub Rs. 10,000 Android based smartphone, the Sony Ericsson W8 does look a bit tacky in Iconic Orange, may be its just me.

Latest Gadgets at the Gadget Show Live 2011‎

Latest Gadgets made its yearly pilgrimage to the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham to play with the latest and greatest tech that manufacturers had to offer. Fighting our way through the bear pit that is the coffee table in the press room, we emerged refreshed and ran around attempting to see as much as possible before the caffeine wore off.

iPad stands were ubiquitous, but the only one that actually caught our eye was Cygnett’s that had copied Apple’s Smart Cover technology (well the wake from sleep functionality) and added a stand that works vertically and horizontally – all in a big (and admittedly slightly bulky) leather case. They were stood next to Henge Docks – a great laptop dock that enabled you to use your MacBook with a Widescreen monitor and pretend you have a full desktop. We also had a quick look at the PopBox – a self-styled “Apple TV” killer, that streams your HD content via DLNA and its own app store. And we also played with some wireless Jaybird headphones, the Qbdesktop USB speakers and FlipVideo who surprisingly said nothing about their impending demise.

Of course this is a tiny fraction of what we had a play with so expect to see a few more in-depth articles over the coming week.

Wacom had just that day released a Bamboo stylus for the iPad. I’m keen doodler and had a quick play. It feels great to hold – and is very close to holding a real pen. It’s also 25 percent slimmer tip than main competitors as the reps insisted on telling me. The prototype app to accompany it (you can of course use the stylus with all drawing apps) looks pretty fun as well but wasn’t yet ready for final assessment. The stylus should be out in mid-May for about £25.

We waved at the people from 3M who were showing off their MPro 180 wireless pico projector rigged up to a PS3 and an iPad. We had a more in-depth look at it here. The most stylish area was the shiny white Golla zone where lots of beautiful people looked over enthusiastic about a range of pretty looking laptop bags and camera cases. We took a look at some here.

Our first stop was Brasso (covered here) who had a little stall set up to clean all our gadgets. As an owner of a filthy iPhone, iPad and pair of glasses it was nice to have someone give them a quick wipedown. Plus there was cake. Orbitsound had their T3 mobile stereo speaker on display – a little iPod classic shaped unit that provides stereo sound on the go – and that can be worn around the neck to create a sound aura. Amazing. Also a potential nightmare if young kids on London buses get hold of it.

Low-End Nokia C2-06 Slider Handset with 2 megapixel camera & dual-SIM

Nokia seems to be adding a couple of more 'Touch and Type' mobile handset models for the emerging markets. Prototype of an upcoming dual-SIM handset, Nokia C2-06 Slider - Touch and Type smartphone was spotted by Indian website Hackintos. This entry level dual-SIM slider was running Symbian Series 40 6th Edition operating system.

Upcoming Touch and Type series Nokia C2-XX handset will have a slider form factor with resistive touchscreen display. This Nokia C2-06 handset has 2 megapixel camera at the back that will give you pretty entry level quality of photos.

No word is available on when this dual-SIM (GSM only) touch and type family Nokia C2-06 slider will be launched and at what price. We'll have to hold our horses for this handset.

HTC Sensation Expected To Be Launched In India Around Monsoons

HTC’s latest smartphone, HTC Sensation, unveiled last week in London, will hit the Indian shore in the second quarter of 2011.

HTC Sensation incorporates a 4.3-inch S-LCD (gorilla glass encased) capacitive touchscreen with a 960 x 540 pixel resolution. It has 768MB of RAM and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor with an Adreno 220 GPU making it the most powerful HTC smartphone till date.

It works on the v.2.3 Android Gingerbread OS and has the latest HTC Sense 3.0 user interface. The internal memory is 1GB which can be extended up to 32GB and the dimensions of the device are 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3 mm and it weighs at 148 grams.

HTC Sensation has an 8.1 mega pixels camera with dual LED flash and touch focus; it can record 1080p HD videos at 30 fps and has a front facing VGA camera for video calling. HTC has introduced a new feature in this device called instant capture. What instant capture does is capture a photo the moment you click the button, unlike older devices where there was a time gap of a few seconds between clicking the camera button and the picture being taken. So you will never miss that priceless moment again.

Another handy tool is the video trimmer which helps you reduce the size of the video so it is easier to share on social networking sites.

The Taiwan based HTC has also introduced Watch – an application and service that puts an entire library of the latest, premium movies and TV shows right at your fingertips, letting people discover the latest video content in an easy and visually engaging way. HTC Watch uses progressive download technology that makes it possible to watch videos without waiting for a huge file to finish downloading. HTC Watch offers the choice of renting or buying videos, and if purchased, lets you watch them on up to five different HTC devices.

Another cool feature in HTC Sensation is its lock screen; you can get info about the weather, stocks updates and social updates directly without unlocking the mobile screen. Samsung unleashes the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1

Step aside Apple; we have a new tablet that's caught our attention! Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1. The company hasn't announced a release date for the 8.9 version of the tablet but you can see the 10.1-inch Wi-Fi only on store shelves on June 8, 2011 in the US. Samsung also plans to launch the device in India very soon after its global launch. It could launch in India as soon as 30 days after its global launch.

The 16GB version of the 10.1-inch device is priced at $499 (Rs. 22,379) and the 32GB at $599 (Rs. 26,864). The 8.9-inch due out in later this year will cost you $469 (Rs. 21,064) for the 16GB version and $569 (Rs. 25,519) for the 32GB one. The prices for the 3G versions of both the devices are still to be revealed. The prices are an approximate conversion of US prices and not the final prices at which the tablets will be launches in India.

In terms of specifications however, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems to be a threat for the iPad 2. The device has an 8.9-inch WXGA TFT LCD display with a resolution of 1200 x 800. The device is just 8.6mm thin. That's 0.036mm thinner than the iPad 2, which to the naked eye really makes no difference. None-the-less it crowns the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 as the thinnest tablet in the market. TheGalaxy Tab 8.9 is also lighter than the iPad 2 by 131gms. (This is beginning to sound like a models anorexia war than tech but any way...). The 8.9-inch beauty boasts of a 1GHz dual core processor running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, has Samsung's TouchWiz 4.0 layer and Flash 10.2 support.

The device will come with 16GB and 32GB storage variants at launch but you can expect a 64GB variant in the future. The device also comes with stereo speakers, full HD video playback, a 2MP Front facing camera; 3MP rear camera with flash and can record video at 720p HD. The device also claims to have a battery life of 10 hours from its 6800-mAh battery.

The 10.1-inch big brother possesses the same specification and is a bit heavier at 595gms. The screen resolution too remains the same at 1200 x 800.

Cisco's Flip Camcorders Bite the Dust

Cisco announced that it will shut down the Flip video camera line as part of a restructuring of its consumer business. In addition to killing the Flip, Cisco will focus its umi video conferencing products on the enterprise, but will continue to sell home Internet routers in retail stores. For current FlipShare users, Cisco says it's working on a transition plan.

In 2009, Cisco bought Pure Digital, creator of the Flip, for $590 million in stock. The acquisition was part of Cisco's plan to capture what it thought was a growing field of video communication among consumers.

While Flip cameras have improved steadily over the last two years -- the latest Flip MinoHD and UltraHD added 60 frames per second video capture-- Cisco rarely experimented with the Flip's familiar candy bar shape. The one recent exception was the Flip SlideHD, a camera with a nice touchscreen butfrustrating controls. The latest Flip cameras don't even include optical zoom, which is standard among digital cameras with video recording.

Cisco also swung and missed on FlipShare TV, a set-top box designed to let people watch their videos, along with videos from other Flip camera users, on a big screen through a dedicated online channel. It seemed a bit redundant in the age of YouTube and Facebook.

All the while, the threat of smartphones and iPods loomed. When Apple chief executive Steve Jobs introduced the fifth-generation iPod Nano with a video camera in 2009, he called out the Flip for offering just a single function at the same price as Apple's media player. The same is true for smartphones, and although Flip cameras offer better video quality, they don't match the storage capacity, location features and Internet connectivity of modern handsets.

Cisco foreshadowed the Flip's demise in February, when Jonathan Kaplan, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco Consumer Products, resigned. Kaplan was chairman and chief executive of Pure Digital when Cisco acquired the company. Announcing Kaplan's resignation, Cisco said it was taking its consumer business "to the next level."

Apparently that means laying off 550 employees and discontinuing a once-proud line of digital video cameras.

Nokia X3 Touch and Type Debuts

Nokia has just announced the launch of its latest mid-range multimedia handset, the X3 Touch and Type. The phone features a 2.4-inch touchscreen as well as a normal, traditional keyboard.

The X3 Touch and Type is Nokia's first attempt at making a phone with a touchscreen display coupled with a normal keypad.

Let's see what other features the X3 Touch and Type comes loaded with. The phone is quite thin and lightweight - it is just 9.6mm thick and tips the scales at just 78g. It is a quad band device with support for 3G, HSPA and Wi-Fi, a music player and an FM radio. The imaging bit is taken care of by the 5-megapixel camera which supports 4x zoom (digital). It can also capture videos.
The phone also comes with dedicated music and messaging keys and in select countries, will be offered with Ovi Music Unlimited, allowing access to a library of over 11 million tracks. For extra storage - up to 16GB - there's a MicroSD memory card slot. The X3 T&T offers five hours of talk time and can remain in standby mode for upto 17 days.

The X3 Touch and Type is expected to be on sale this quarter and will retail for approximately 125, (Rs. 7,500) excluding taxes and subsidies. It will initially be offered in China, Ireland, the UK, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico Saudi and Yemen. When launched, it would be available in a brushed aluminium finish and with a choice of five colors.

Android Handsets Specification Comparison

The Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 price range has suddenly become very exciting because of all the new Android phones that are pouring in thick and fast. For a prospective buyer, this is both good news as well as bad news. Good news because he now has a choice; bad news because there are too many options to choose from.

Each of these phones differs from one another by one or two features. It becomes difficult to keep track of these things and even if you use a compare engine the task becomes tedious because of the sheer number. So we decided to club all of these high-end smartphones into a table and list out all the important specifications, so that it is easy to compare. Some of these handsets are currently on sale in India, whereas others are yet to launch but worth keeping an eye out for.

Since these are just the specifications, we would advise not to make your buying decision solely based on them, but also have a hands-on with the phone or read/watch online reviews before committing to any of them.

Nokia Launches E6 Touchscreen Smartphone

The Nokia E6 that we have been seeing in leaked pictures so far has become official. The E6 is a business phone based on the successful E71 smartphone but with some new tricks up its sleeve. For starters, there is a 2.46-inch touchscreen display with VGA resolution, which gives it incredible pixel density of 325 ppi, the same as the iPhone 4's Retina display. The phone boasts of a long battery life and Microsoft's messaging experience out-of-the-box.

The phone comes loaded with productivity and social networking applications as well as Nokia's free Ovi Maps navigation. The E6 has an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash that can record videos in 720p resolution. The phone has expandable memory with 8GB built-in. The phone will go on sale for approximately Rs. 22,000 later this quarter.

The E6 will be running the newer version of Symbian OS, nicknamed Anna. It features new icons, faster web browser and a portrait QWERTY keypad (not available on the E6). This new OS will be available on the N8, E7, C7 and C6 soon.

LG launched Optimus 2X, Optimus Black in India

LG has priced the two devices the Optimus 2x and the Optimus Black at Rs 30,000 and Rs 27,000 respectively.

LG has launched its flagship smartphones, the Optimus 2X and Optimus Black, in India. LG is also planning to launch several more mobile phones across category for the Indian market during the year ahead.

The LG Optimus 2X is now officially the first ever dual core processor based smartphone available in the Indian market. It features the slightly older version of Android, the Android 2.2, but it is upgradable to 2.3.

It also includes a total of 512 MB of RAM and eight GB of onboard storage. The inclusion of the nVidia Tegra GPU is a welcome inclusion. With its Gyro sensor and the accelerometer sensor, it is expected to be notch above the rest in gaming. A four inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and an eight megapixel camera, capable of recording HD videos, are also included in this.

The Optimus Black is a slightly stripped version of the 2X with Android 2.2, a 1GHz single core processor, and a five megapixel camera and a lesser two GB of onboard storage. It features the Nova display, which LG claims is the best for a mobile device with 700nits of brightness making it legitimate even in bright light conditions.

LG has priced the two devices the Optimus 2x and the Optimus Black at Rs 30,000 and Rs 27,000 respectively. The devices will be available across all major and small mobile outlet including LG stores. LG has not announced any network partnership with any service operator so no special rate plans are available for these two devices as of now.
