Apple Launches Unlocked iPhone 3GS for Rs. 19,990 in India

The iPhone 3GS was available quite a while back through network operators like Vodafone and Airtel. But then, these devices were not unlocked and users were tied down to those particular subscribers if they had to use their iPhones. However it looks like Apple is enticing more people to buy their smartphones by announcing the factory unlocked version at a very reasonable price of Rs. 19,990.

At an alluring price?!?


According to BGR, the iPhone 3GS will be offered by Airtel and Aircel for now, probably others will follow suit after some time. But what’s cool is that you can change operators as and when you wish and keep the handset with you. It’s quite obvious that many will crib about India being Apple’s favourite dumping ground and that we only get old products etc. But on the brighter side, there are many out there who would wish to own an iPhone but are put off by the exorbitant pricing. This initiative can possibly attract more people to Apple’s products.

Of course, you’ll be missing out on a few features like Facetime, but you can’t have everything, right? We’ll take a quick look at the iPhone 3GS’ specifications now.

Nokia N9 Full Specifications, Features and Price

The N9 has arrived. Functional units of Nokia's long-awaited MeeGo smartphone have finally landed into our eager hands and we've got a gallery of images to provide you with below. What we can say from our first experience is that we're in the presence of a fantastically designed device with a gorgeous AMOLED screen and some highly responsive performance. Hold tight as we're updating our fuller impressions after the break, where you'll soon be treated to our first hands-on video with the Nokia N9.

The N9 UI, as you'll have learned from the product announcement, is Nokia's Harmattan skin atop MeeGo 1.2, which is built around three core home views. The central one is your app organizer / launcher, to one side of which you have a notifications and activities section -- which will be populated by phone calls, calendar alerts, and social network updates -- and to the other you get a live app switcher. That trio is navigable in a carousel fashion, meaning that you can keep cycling through all three by flicking your finger in one direction. Double-tapping the screen wakes the phone up and then you can unlock it with a swipe in any direction. Similar swipes, starting from one edge of the screen and going to the other, allow you to exit apps into the home screen. What we can say about all these aspects of the interface is that they're done exceedingly well and make the somewhat aged OMAP3630 processor look terrific. Fluid animations are evident throughout, navigation is natural, and this marks a major advance over anything else Nokia has given us on the software front in terms of touch-based UI.

Physically, the N9 feels about as good as a device built out of plastic can do. Nokia's devoutly calling it polycarbonate in order to highlight that this isn't just any old plastic, it's a high-grade variety that inspires confidence in its durability while also having the sharp looks to keep aesthetes happy as well. The whole phone is essentially built into the external shell, which does mean the battery isn't user-replaceable and there's no microSD expandability, but at least you can hot-swap the MicroSIM (yes, Micro) card without needing to reboot the handset.

The Clear Black AMOLED display is truly a sight to behold, with stunning viewing angles, a curved Gorilla Glass front, and some pretty excellent (for AMOLED) performance out in the sunlight. We compared it side by side with a Super LCD-equipped Incredible S and the N9 more than held its own. The screen is easily one of this new phone's great strengths, though we'd argue the intuitive UI, responsiveness, and eye-catching industrial design are pretty high up on that list too. All in all, we're highly impressed by what Nokia has put together here, though the N9 does prompt us to ask why the company has opted against making MeeGo its long-term smartphone OS of choice. What we've seen today is a damn fine smartphone with some very neat ideas, one which certainly merits the title of being Nokia's flagship. Or it will do, when it launches later in the year.

These phones would be available in Mumbai first, followed by other Indian cities at the retail outlets such as Planet M, Tata Croma, Hyper City, Star Bazar, Mobile & Gadgets, Indian Naval Canteen, Kings Electronics, Hotspot, Reliance Web World and NEXT electronics.

Watch Out, Nook: Amazon Launches $164 Kindle 3G With Ads

Watch out, Nook: Amazon has just launched a 3G version of its ad-supported Kindle for $164.

The new device, officially called the Kindle 3G With Special Offers, is almost identical to the $114 ad-supported Wi-Fi Kindle except for the addition of 3G functionality. The device is a 6-inch device that displays the occasional advertisement. In return, users get special offers and a $25 discount on the Kindle 3G’s $189 price tag. In a statement, Amazon Kindle director Jay Marine called it “the lowest price for any 3G ereader.”

The special deals associated with the 3G Kindle are similar to the Wi-Fi version. Some of the special offers Amazon will launch “in the coming weeks” include $10 for a $20 Amazon gift card, 20% discounts on 200 HDTVs, and $1 for select Kindle books.

The announcement of the Kindle 3G With Special Offers comes just hours after Barnes & Noble unveiled its $139 touchscreen Nook, a Wi-Fi-only ereader device that is lighter than the Kindle and boasts two months of battery life. Barnes & Noble also claims that it controls 25% of the ebook market, something that can’t be sitting well with Amazon.

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is actually a replacement for another tablet in the same name, which Samsung itself thought was unworthy of competing with Apple’s iPad 2.

The device sports a dual-core, 1 GHz CPU, a 10.1 inch, 1280×800 pixel screen, a 3-megapixel back camera as well as 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats, and all of that comes in a case that weighs 1.3 pounds and is only .34” thick.

Toshiba to announce its new Android Tablet "Thrive"

Toshiba is soon going to launch an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet named "Thrive". The tablet was being advertised for pre-order at JR.com, but has suddenly and inexplicably been pulled down as of the time of filing this report. You can still viewed the Google Cache copy of the page over here. The price quoted was US$579, which is about Rs.26,200 - not bad for what is on offer.

Powered by a 1 GHz Dual core Tegra 2 processor, this 10.1-inch tablet sports a capacitive multitouch screen with 1280x800 pixels resolution. This screen features Toshiba Adaptive Display technology, which adjusts the brightness and contrast to suit the surrounding lighting conditions, practically allowing you to use this laptop even in sunny weather. Adobe Flash support with hardware acceleration is present for an enriching web browsing experience.

Along with a 5 Megapixel primary camera with Auto-focus, Digital zoom and 720p video capture at the back, there is also a 2 Megapixel HD camera at the front for video calling. HDMI output lets you hook up this tablet to your HDTV display using an HDMI cable and watch movies on the big screen in 1080p Full HD resolution. Thanks to the Toshiba Tablet's Resolution+ technology incorporated in this device, even Standard Definition (SD) video content is upscaled neatly, with no details lost.

The tablet features on-board, a GPS, an accelerometer and a digital compass, helping to pinpoint its exact location and motion. Even the battery is the user-replaceable, which is something every consumer would want, and no tablet manufacturer wants to give. This allows you to carry a second battery pack and replace the battery on-the-go when the first battery runs out of juice. Connectivity is taken care of by Wi-Fi (with hotspot capability), USB 2.0 (with one full and one mini USB port) and Bluetooth. No mention is made of GSM connectivity, so that is probably not going to be available in this version at least. An SD memory card slot is also provided to augment the 32 GB internal memory on-board the device.

Toshiba has been delaying the launch of this tablet, and may delay it to the third quarter of this calendar year. The launch date is therefore not clear. We must note here that Toshiba has already launched the Prot g 12-inch tablet in India, so this tablet may be launched soon too.
